Travis, the owner of Pony Girl Ranch and the human ponies that live there is on edge; his only son is returning home after several years away studying in England. When Ethan comes home he can't wait; he's not seen or ridden a pony girl in all the time he's been away. As soon as he sees Flame and Saturn harnessed and ready to race, familiar feelings return; the desire to control and ride pony girls. His father challenges him to a race, almost a half marathon in the summer heat of the desert.
The jockeys have absolute obedience from of the animals but to make the race a test of skill each pony is wearing blackout contact lenses; they will have to surrender total control to their masters for the duration of the race.
Will Ethan's youth enable him to win the long run; or will his father's years of experience take the day?
